The Invite Sex Scenes: Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz and the Partner Swap Night

Olivia Wilde and Penélope Cruz in the partner swap scene from The Invite (1:29). Every other sexy and nude scene from the film is below, in the order the night unfolds.

Olivia Wilde directs and stars in The Invite, the A24 sex comedy that started a bidding war at Sundance in January and has just landed on HBO Max, and I think it is the most grown-up film about sex anyone has made in years. Wilde and Seth Rogen play Angela and Joe, a married couple who have not slept together in a year. Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton play Pina and Hawk, the neighbours upstairs whose loud sex Joe and Angela can hear through the ceiling. One dinner party later, half of them are in their underwear. I have put every scene from The Invite worth watching on one page: 6 clips in HD, each with its length and what is actually going on, from Olivia Wilde’s topless moment in the mirror to her kiss with Penélope Cruz and the partner swap that goes hilariously wrong. For the rest of their careers, see my Olivia Wilde nude scenes and my Penélope Cruz page.

The Invite Sex Scene: Olivia Wilde and Penélope Cruz Swap Partners (1:29)

Joe and Angela’s apartment, late in the evening | With: Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz, Edward Norton, Seth Rogen

This is the scene the whole film builds to. Pina and Hawk have admitted why they came downstairs, Pina has decided a foursome is a bad idea for a couple who fight this much, and so the four of them settle on a swap instead. Angela comes out of the bedroom in a pale yellow lace bra and underwear and walks straight into the kitchen to Hawk, while Joe, in his denim shirt, watches his wife walk away from him. Pina, in black lingerie and platinum curls, waits for Joe in the armchair and slips a strap off her shoulder as he works up the nerve to cross the room. Wilde cuts back and forth between the two couples, Angela perched on the counter with Hawk and Joe edging toward Pina, and lets you feel how badly both of them want this to work and how little idea either of them has what to do next.

Why does this one come first? Because it is the only scene where both of the film’s leading women are in lingerie at the same time, and it is the one people are searching for since The Invite started streaming. It is also the best example of what Wilde does all the way through: she sets up something that looks like it is about to become very explicit, then holds on a face and lets the comedy and the nerves do the work.

Every Other Sexy and Nude Scene in The Invite

The swap gets the attention, but the night starts well before it. Here is every other worthwhile scene from the film, from Angela getting dressed to the moment Joe’s back gives out.

Olivia Wilde Topless in the Bedroom Mirror (0:18)

The Invite (2026) | With: Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde

Early in the evening Wilde plays a little joke on the audience. Rogen fills the foreground, out of focus and talking, while behind him, in a tall arched mirror, Angela is changing for dinner. She stands topless in the doorway for a few seconds, reaches up, and pulls on a striped top and then a green shirt as if nothing in the world is happening. Joe never turns around. It is a quick, casual moment, shot from across the room, and it is Olivia Wilde’s one topless moment on this page.

Olivia Wilde and Penélope Cruz Kiss (0:04)

Four seconds, and the whole room changes. Pina, Penélope Cruz with a mop of platinum curls, leans in and kisses Angela, and Angela, braid down her back and green shirt still buttoned, closes her eyes and lets it happen. When they part she laughs, a little stunned, as Pina lifts a hand as if to say that was nothing. It is short, but it tells you exactly where this dinner party is heading.

Olivia Wilde Strips to Her Lingerie for Hawk (1:30)

The Invite (2026) | With: Olivia Wilde, Edward Norton

In the dim living room she unbuttons her green shirt and lets it drop, down to a pale yellow lace bra, strips to her underwear and walks into the kitchen, where Hawk, Edward Norton in black, is waiting. She hops up on the counter, he moves in close, and then the scene turns into something better than a sex scene: a long, tight close-up on Wilde’s face as Hawk talks to her low and slow and she tries to decide whether she can actually go through with it. Nerves, excitement and a little panic cross her face in about a minute, and by the end they are standing nose to nose in the half dark.

Penélope Cruz and Seth Rogen in the Dark (1:54)

The Invite (2026) | With: Penélope Cruz, Seth Rogen

Meanwhile Pina gets Joe alone. At first they just stand between the bookshelves, Rogen stiff in his denim shirt while Cruz circles him in a black top, so close he does not know where to look. Then the lights are almost gone and the camera stays tight on their faces: her hands on his cheeks, his glasses, her lips brushing his, a slow kiss and her black lace bra in the shadows as she pulls him in. The longest clip on the page and the most intimate, and it ends on Joe grinning like a man who cannot believe his evening.

Penélope Cruz’s Dance Ends With Joe on the Floor (1:03)

The Invite (2026) | With: Penélope Cruz, Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Edward Norton

This is where the night goes wrong, and it is the funniest minute in the film. It opens on Angela lying back on the black-and-white checkered floor, eyes half closed, then cuts to Joe fumbling with his jeans while Pina dances for him in black lingerie under a single lamp. He goes for it, and his back goes with him. The rest of the clip is Rogen on all fours on the rug, groaning, while the others gather round, and Angela hovers in her underwear in a doorway. Sexy for thirty seconds, then pure farce, which is the whole film in one scene.

What I Left Out

There is not much to leave out of this one, which is part of why it is such an easy film to recommend. I skipped a 2:42 fan compilation of Angela’s scenes because it repeats the mirror and lingerie clips above, and a few seconds of Joe and Angela arguing that have nothing to do with anyone getting undressed. Everything on this page is consensual and between adults, which is how a film about four grown-ups negotiating a sex party should be.

Why The Invite Works

The script is by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, adapting Cesc Gay’s Spanish comedy The People Upstairs (Sentimental), and it is smart about one thing most sex comedies get wrong: the sex is never really the point. Pina is a psychotherapist and sexologist, and the more she watches Joe and Angela bicker, the less she wants to sleep with them and the more she ends up counselling them. So every scene on this page is half seduction and half therapy session. Wilde shot the film in 23 days, in story order, on 35mm film, and you can feel the actors getting looser as the night goes on. Rogen is the best he has been in years, and Cruz, who won Best Supporting Actress at the Astra Midseason Awards for this, steals every scene she walks into.
