A year after Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos took Emma Stone, Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe and gave each of them three different people to play in one long, strange, very funny film. Kinds of Kindness is three stories with the same cast, and in almost every one of them somebody ends up undressed: a foursome caught on an old home video, a wife who comes back from the sea a little too eager, a cult that tests its members in a sauna and its candidates on a bathroom scale. Story 2: R.M.F. Is Flying | With: Emma Stone, Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons, Mamoudou Athie
Liz has been lost at sea, Daniel is falling apart, and his friends Neil and Martha come over to keep him company. Their idea of comfort is the strangest thing in the film: they sit on the sofa with him and put on an old home video of the four of them in bed together, years ago, when everything was fine. On the TV, Liz and Martha are naked on a dark bedspread with Daniel and Neil, laughing and kissing and taking turns, while in the living room three grown adults watch it with completely blank faces and the cat stares at the screen. Every so often Lanthimos cuts from the TV to the footage itself, close and sweaty under a little desk lamp, with Emma Stone on top and Margaret Qualley beside her. It is the scene everyone looks for, and it is as funny as it is hot.
Why does this one come first? Because it is the only real sex scene in the film with both of its leading women in it, and it is the one people type into the search bar. It also shows the trick Lanthimos plays all the way through: he gives you something explicit, then cuts to someone watching it with no expression at all, and you are left laughing at a scene you came here to see. Stone and Qualley play two old friends who once happily swapped partners for a night, and that one tape tells you more about what Daniel and Liz used to be than any dialogue in the story.
Story One: The Death of R.M.F.
Robert, played by Jesse Plemons, lets his boss Raymond decide everything: what he eats, which house he lives in, who he marries and when he sleeps with her. It is the most buttoned-up of the three stories, and the women in it are mostly seen through Raymond’s world of tennis courts and marble hallways.

In the first story Margaret Qualley is Vivian, the woman who lives in Raymond’s mansion and gets everything she wants as long as he gets everything he wants. We meet her floating down his hallway in a short lilac silk robe and matching shorts, phone pressed to her ear, dark curls bouncing, while Raymond strolls in behind her in his tennis whites. Fifteen seconds, no nudity, but it is the whole character in one shot: bored, beautiful and completely kept.
Story Two: R.M.F. Is Flying
Daniel is a policeman whose wife Liz, a marine biologist, went missing at sea. When she is rescued and comes home, she likes food she used to hate, her shoes no longer fit and the cat hisses at her, and Daniel becomes sure she is not his wife at all. This is the story with the home video above and with Emma Stone’s most openly seductive scene.

Liz is home, rescued from the sea, and something about her is wrong. She is blonde, braided and suddenly very interested in her husband, and on this morning she will not let him leave for work. She lies across the unmade bed in the amber light of their wooden house, then rises onto her knees in nothing but a pair of panties as Daniel buttons his police uniform. She reaches for him, holds his face, and when that does not work she takes his nightstick and plays with it like a toy. Daniel just looks at her as if she were a stranger, and in his head she is. Halfway through, a black-and-white flash of palm trees and a beach cuts in, a glimpse of wherever she really was.
Story Three: R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich
The longest and wildest part of the film. Emily and Andrew belong to a cult led by Omi and Aka that believes in purity, water and very close physical inspection, and they are driving around looking for a woman with the power to bring the dead back. Along the way Emma Stone, Hunter Schafer and Margaret Qualley all get their nude or near-nude moments.

In the third story Emma Stone is Emily, a devoted member of a water cult run by Omi and Aka. Anyone suspected of sleeping with an outsider has to sweat the impurity out, so Emily sits alone in a scorching wooden sauna in a sheer nude bra, head tilted back against the boards. The heat wins in the end and she slides down onto the floor, naked and shining with sweat. Then the strangest part: Aka, played by Hong Chau, bends over her body outside and licks the sweat from her navel to taste whether she is clean. Lanthimos at his most deadpan, and Emma Stone at her most fearless.

Emily and Andrew are hunting for a woman who can bring the dead back to life, and Anna is the latest candidate. In a bare, pale-green room she takes everything off and stands on a scale while Emily, in a brown suit, circles her with a tape measure, checking her height, her hips and her chest like a tailor who has never smiled. Hunter Schafer stays completely still and completely naked for the whole thing, her clothes in a pink pile on the table beside her. She does not pass the test. It is Hunter Schafer’s big moment in the film, and people still talk about it.

Emily believes the woman she is searching for has already appeared to her in a dream, and the film shows us that dream in grainy black and white. A blonde woman with her arms over her head, a party in a house full of lamps, dark figures crossing a dry pool at night, and the same woman standing half undressed at the edge of it. In the middle, in colour, comes the moment the dream walks into real life: Rebecca, Margaret Qualley with a platinum bob, walks up to Emily’s table at a neon-lit restaurant bar and says she knows exactly who they are.

Rebecca calls Emily and says she can meet the last requirement, so Emily drives out to her big white house in the woods. Rebecca opens the door in a sleek black swimsuit cut high on the hips and open across the back, and walks barefoot through the sunlit living room while Emily waits on the sofa in her brown suit, saying almost nothing. Margaret Qualley moves around the room like a dancer, all long legs and nerves, and you can feel that something is about to happen by the pool outside. I have stopped the clip before it does.
What I Left Out
Two clips that circulate under this film’s name are not on this page on purpose. In the third story Emily’s estranged husband drugs her and assaults her while she is unconscious, and later Emily knocks Ruth out at her veterinary practice and Ruth lies topless and unconscious on the floor. Neither scene is something anyone agreed to, and that is not what this site is for. I also skipped a few fan-made compilations and blurry re-rips of the home video that add nothing to the clean version above.
Why Kinds of Kindness Gets Under Your Skin
Lanthimos wrote this one with Efthimis Filippou, his partner on Dogtooth and The Lobster, and the three stories are about the same thing from three angles: people who will do absolutely anything for someone else’s approval, even when it costs them their body. That is why the nudity in this film never feels decorative. Emily sweats in a box because the cult tells her to, Anna stands naked on a scale because she wants to be chosen, and Liz offers herself to a husband who cannot stand to look at her. It is uncomfortable and very funny at the same time, and Jesse Plemons won Best Actor at Cannes for holding it all together in the middle.

Kinds of Kindness is an absurdist black comedy anthology directed by Yorgos Lanthimos from a screenplay he wrote with Efthimis Filippou. It premiered in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024, where Jesse Plemons won the Best Actor award, and Searchlight Pictures released it in US cinemas on June 21, 2024. It runs 164 minutes, was shot by Robbie Ryan with music by Jerskin Fendrix, and made about $16.4 million worldwide on a budget of around $15 million. Every main actor plays a different character in each of the three stories, which are linked only by a mysterious man known as R.M.F.
