Nico’s take: the Final Girl just showed us who she really is
Here’s what I see, and it’s not a costume. It’s a confession. Dove told Radio Times years ago, back when she was a Disney kid promoting Cloud 9, that Tim Burton was the one director she’d want to work with and that “my absolute favourite is Edward Scissorhands. It’s strange, and I love the strange” (Radio Times). Years later, she finally put the suit on.
From behind the camera, the hard part of this look isn’t the blades, it’s the face. Edward is supposed to be sad and harmless. Dove plays him sad and dangerous: chin down, eyes up, leather open to the sternum. That’s not Burton’s shy boy, that’s a femme fatale who happens to own scissors.
And the timing is no accident. Her debut album is called Final Girl, the horror-movie girl who survives to the last reel, and it drops on Nov. 6. Gothic, dark, a little bloody: this shoot is album promo dressed as Halloween. Smart.
My bet: the crawling-on-all-fours frame is the one that sells records. Last year she was Frank-N-Furter in fishnets, this year a leather-clad outcast, and both times the internet ate it.
