Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘Just Give Me a Chance’ Gay-Crush Story, and the Husband Twist That Wasn’t

Jennifer Lawrence once fell for a guy who told her he was gay, and she told him to give her a chance anyway. That’s the story she told Alex Cooper on the Oct. 28 Call Her Daddy, the same episode where she confirmed she’s back as Katniss. A clip racing around X claims the twist is that the man is her husband, art dealer Cooke Maroney. It isn’t quite that simple: in the full episode she says “That’s my husband,” then immediately, “I’m just kidding.”

Watch: Jennifer Lawrence’s “worst red flag” story (Call Her Daddy, Oct. 28, 2026, 0:28)

What she actually said

Cooper asked about the worst red flag she has ever overlooked. From the clip, checked against the episode transcript:

Lawrence: “A guy that I was obsessed with was gay and told me he was gay.”
Cooper: “And you were like?”
Lawrence: “And I was like, ‘No, you’re not. You’re gay right now. Just give me a chance.’”
Cooper: “So you didn’t end up together, obviously.”
Lawrence: “No, we did. That’s my husband. I’m just kidding.”

The “I’m just kidding” is in the episode transcripts (Podscripts) but the viral 28-second cut ends right on “That’s my husband,” which is how a joke turned into “her husband was gay” headlines. One account’s post with the clip, which said she “had to beg him for a chance” and that they have “been married for eight years,” has 150,000+ views. Both claims are wrong: it was a joke, and Lawrence and Maroney married in October 2019, so it’s seven years this month.

What we know about her real marriage

  • Lawrence and Maroney, a New York gallery director, were introduced by her friend Laura Simpson and married in Rhode Island in October 2019.
  • Minutes later in the same interview she joked about him again: when he wants out of plans “he just says like, hey, can’t tonight,” while she invents broken feet and tornadoes. “He’s direct,” she said.
  • In this week’s The Cut cover story, she says he warned her during Mes product testing: “If you don’t wash your hair, you have to get a hotel room.”

NICO’S TAKE

Jennifer Lawrence telling a gay man “you’re gay right now, just give me a chance” is the most confident thing I’ve heard all year. Delusional? Sure. Iconic? Also yes.

And to everyone sharing the clip as “her husband was gay”: watch to the end of the full episode. She was kidding. The only person she’s begging for anything right now is the box office on Nov. 20. Her real love scenes are on her hub →
